CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Would Sam Harper be at home? And what would his reaction be when the FBI knocked on his door?

At this hour, Nina saw the commercial section of town was dark, with little activity taking place, and the streets quiet. Only a few of the windows were lit in the buildings that Daniel was speeding past. The GPS was bringing them inexorably closer to the street where Harper lived.

Here it was. A quiet, narrow street with a big factory at the top end that was all closed up at this hour. It gave the street a deserted feel. Although Nina was sure it would be a bustling, well-populated place during the day, it was now after nine p.m.

Was Sam Harper the killer – and if so, would he be here? Or were they too late to save another victim?

“Down here. On the right.” Daniel stopped outside the small building, which had a blank frontage, with only a closed door. No windows overlooking this street. So, was he here?

Nina climbed out of the car. She was tired, but not exhausted, the way she’d been on the last case. The food had given her a boost of energy. Whatever was going to happen when they knocked on the door, she hoped she’d be ready for it.

Daniel reached the front door, and for a few seconds, they stopped and listened.

It wasn’t totally quiet inside this converted warehouse. Nina could hear a distinctive, repetitive noise as she listened. A soft, whispering thud that repeated again and again.

She thought there was a small printing setup in there. Perhaps he had invested in a small machine to get his message out. That was what it sounded like, that ongoing rustle and thud.

Daniel lifted his hand and rang the bell. It made a harsh, buzzing noise and Nina listened carefully.

Footsteps were approaching. Then they paused outside the door.

“Who’s there?” a voice called out.

Nina watched Daniel hesitate, weighing up the best course of action in these circumstances. Identifying themselves now might mean that the door never got opened at all. But if they didn’t, they were violating protocol.

“Is that Mr. Sam Harper?” Daniel called out, skirting the issue for now by confirming the ID of the occupant.

The next moment, the door was opened cautiously. No more than a few inches. Nina had time to see a suspicious eye framed in the small gap.

“Mr. Sam Harper?” Daniel asked again. “FBI here.”

The eye widened. And then, just as Daniel made a grab for the door handle, Harper slammed it shut. The slam resounded in the quiet night.

“Mr. Harper!” Daniel called. “This is urgent. Open up. We need answers!”

Now, Nina could hear the urgent thudding of retreating footsteps down the corridor. They were fast and desperate. This man wasn’t hiding out. He was fleeing.

“He’s on the run! We need to cover the other exits,” she shouted.

“I’ll go,” Daniel turned, but Nina grabbed his arm.

“No,” she hissed. “This time, we need to cover the exits.”

She wasn’t waiting here, abandoning her partner, leaving him to a solitary chase down.
